How to Win Google's AI Answer Box (AEO Guide)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so a search engine selects it as the direct answer: the AI Overview at the top of Google, the featured snippet, a People Also Ask entry, or the reply a voice assistant reads out loud. The goal is not a ranking. The goal is the answer slot itself. That distinction matters more every month, because SparkToro found that 68.01% of US Google searches now end without a click to the open web. For most questions your buyers ask, the answer box is the whole game.

Here is how the answer gets picked, and how a small team can win it.

What answer engine optimization is

AEO is a set of content-structure and markup choices that raise the odds a search engine extracts your text as the direct answer to a question. It works on answer surfaces inside search engines: AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, and voice responses. It is not a new tool or a paid placement. It is mostly the discipline of writing questions as headings and answers as short, self-contained paragraphs.

Think of it this way. Classic SEO earns you a seat on the results page. AEO decides whether Google reads your words aloud, in its own voice, at the very top of that page. When someone asks their phone “how long does cold email take to work”, exactly one source supplies the sentence that gets spoken. AEO is the competition for that sentence.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: three disciplines, one content base

The three overlap, but they are not the same job. SEO wins rankings on a results page. AEO wins the answer surfaces that sit on top of those rankings. GEO wins citations inside standalone AI chat engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity, which we covered in depth in our guide to generative engine optimization. Same content foundation, three different scoreboards.

The practical reading for a founder: you do not run three separate content programs. You write one set of well-structured, well-sourced pages, then check three scoreboards.

Both features work by passage extraction. Google retrieves candidate pages, splits them into passages, and selects the passage that most directly and completely answers the question. A featured snippet is one passage from one page, quoted with a link. An AI Overview is a generated summary stitched from several sources, with citations. In both cases the winning unit is a short, self-contained block of text, not a whole page.

Two numbers describe the current selection behavior. First, coverage moves fast: Semrush tracked AI Overviews across 10 million keywords through 2025 and watched prevalence climb from 6.49% of queries in January to a 24.61% peak in July, then settle near 15.69% by November as Google recalibrated. Second, the sourcing pool widened dramatically. In Ahrefs data covering 863,000 keywords, the share of AI Overview citations that rank in the top 10 for the same query fell from 76% to 38%, with the rest split between positions 11-100 and pages beyond the top 100. Google now runs a “query fan-out”: it splits your question into related sub-queries and pulls answers from pages that rank for those sub-queries rather than for the literal search alone.

That second number is the startup opening. You no longer need to outrank an incumbent on the head term to appear in the answer. You need the clearest passage for one of the sub-questions Google fans out to.

Featured snippets still matter where they survive. When a snippet appears, it takes the top slot and, per First Page Sage’s CTR data, earns a 42.9% click-through rate, ahead of the 39.8% a normal first position gets. And snippets are what voice assistants tend to read aloud, so the same passage that wins the snippet often becomes the spoken answer too.

Zero-click search: the goal shifts from traffic to being the answer

Zero-click search means the user gets what they need on the results page and never visits a website. It is now the default outcome: 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024, and SparkToro notes that when an AI Overview appears, click-through rates drop by nearly 60%.

You can read that as bad news for traffic, and it is. But it changes the objective rather than ending the game. If two thirds of searches resolve on the page, then the impression is the asset: your brand name, your definition, your number, shown at the moment of the question. Brands that own answer slots get remembered and searched for by name later. Brands that only ranked links lose both the click and the impression. This is the same logic that drives AI marketing agents toward being present in answers everywhere instead of chasing visits alone.

Structure content as questions with direct answers

The AEO habit that pays off most: make the H2 the literal question, then answer it completely in the first sentence or two underneath, in 40-70 words, before adding detail. Write the answer so it survives being lifted out of the page alone. Skip phrases like “as we said above” and pronouns that point backward. Get to the payoff without a setup paragraph.

A working checklist:

  • Mine real questions. People Also Ask boxes appear on 51.85% of searches in Semrush Sensor data, and they are free market research: each entry is a question Google already wants answered. Semrush’s AI Overviews study also found PAA shows up alongside AI Overviews on 90.03% of those SERPs, so the two surfaces feed on the same question inventory.
  • Give each question its own block: an H2 or H3 phrased as the question, then the direct answer, then supporting detail. Do not braid two questions into one section.
  • Match the format the question expects. Definitions want an “X is…” sentence. Processes want numbered steps. Comparisons want a table. Google extracts lists and tables into snippets directly from clean HTML.
  • Put numbers and names up front. A passage with a concrete figure and a source beats an adjective every time, in answer boxes and in chat engines alike.
  • Add an FAQ section for the long-tail phrasings that do not deserve their own page. This very article does it below.

Schema and clean HTML: what still matters after FAQ rich results died

Be honest about schema in 2026: the visual rewards are mostly gone, the machine-readability value is not. Google restricted FAQ rich results to government and health sites and deprecated HowTo back in 2023, and in May 2026 it stopped showing FAQ rich results entirely. Nobody is getting accordion dropdowns in the SERP anymore.

So why keep the markup? Because answer engines are machines, and structured data plus clean HTML is how machines parse you with confidence. FAQPage and Article markup label your questions and answers unambiguously. Organization markup pins down who you are, which matters when your name is ambiguous; “Gantra” also happens to be a pharmaceutical, so entity clarity is not academic for us. And semantic HTML (real heading hierarchy, real <table> and <ol> elements, content present in the initial HTML rather than rendered by JavaScript) is what passage extraction actually operates on. We go deeper on what to mark up and what to skip in our guide to schema markup for AI search, and on which bots read it in AI crawlers explained.

The priority order is fixed: content structure first, clean HTML second, schema third. Markup cannot rescue a page that buries its answer.

How to measure AEO when the win is zero-click

Measure answer ownership, not clicks alone. Build a list of 20-40 real buyer questions, run them through Google weekly, and record three things per question: who holds the AI Overview citation, who holds the featured snippet, and whether you appear in People Also Ask. Track the trend, because answer slots churn constantly. A snapshot tells you almost nothing.

Then use Search Console as your instrument panel. The signature of AEO success is rising impressions with flat or falling clicks on question-shaped queries: you are being shown as the answer without earning the visit. Segment those queries and watch the pattern, and set up the reporting once so it runs itself; our walkthrough on tracking AI search traffic in GA4 covers the referral side, including visits that arrive from AI Overview citations. The final downstream metric is branded search volume: people who saw your answer come back and type your name.

This weekly loop is exactly the kind of chore that dies on a founder’s calendar, which is why we automated it. Gantra runs 12 marketing agents, and the daily SEO and GEO audits, which check crawlability, answer structure, and AI visibility, are on the free plan. The article agents write in question-first shape by default, auto-publish is live for LinkedIn and X, and Reddit, Hacker News, Medium, and Dev.to get one-click share drafts. Nothing magic about it. The loop just runs every day instead of never.

The takeaway

AEO in one paragraph: the answer slot is the new first position, and two thirds of searches never click past it. Win it by phrasing headings as real questions, answering each one in a liftable 40-70 word block, matching the format the question expects, and keeping your HTML and schema clean enough for machines to parse without guessing. The sourcing pool for AI Overviews has widened far beyond the top 10, so small sites with the clearest passage now beat big sites with the vaguest one. Track answer ownership weekly, read impressions-without-clicks as the win it is, and let branded search confirm it. If you want the loop to run without you, Gantra starts free.

Frequently asked questions

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of structuring content so a search engine selects it as the direct answer: the AI Overview, the featured snippet, a People Also Ask entry, or the response a voice assistant reads aloud. Success means owning the answer slot on the results page, not ranking a blue link.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO targets answer surfaces inside search engines, mainly Google: AI Overviews, featured snippets, and People Also Ask. GEO targets citations inside standalone AI chat engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. The writing tactics overlap heavily, but the surfaces, the selection mechanics, and the measurement are different.

Does FAQ schema still matter after Google removed FAQ rich results?

The visual rich result is gone: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026. But FAQPage markup is still valid structured data, it still helps machines parse your questions and answers, and Google confirms unused markup causes no harm. Keep it for machine readability, not for stars in the SERP.

How do you measure AEO if the wins are zero-click?

Track answer ownership directly: run your target questions through Google weekly and record who holds the AI Overview, the snippet, and the PAA entries. In Search Console, watch for rising impressions with flat clicks on question queries, which usually means you are being shown as an answer. Branded search growth is the downstream signal.

Should a startup do AEO before classic SEO?

No. Answer surfaces still draw heavily from pages that already rank somewhere, so you need an indexed, crawlable site with real topical coverage first. AEO is a formatting and structure layer you add on top of working SEO, and most of it costs nothing extra once you write in question-and-answer shape.
